2018 was the year of the wild west, with movies like The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and games like Red Dead Redemption 2 gaining popularity in North America. In April of this year, twenty year old Montero Lamar Hill, better known as “Lil Nas X,” threw a never before seen spin on the glorified western idea with “Old Town Road“. The song paired famous Tennessee country style lyrics with a modern hip-hop-esque beat. The song was a hit, and in days Hill was an internet sensation.
Soon after the success of “Old Town Road”, Hill and Billy Ray Cyrus remixed the song, making the hit even more popular. Ever since its release, Hill’s single has been #1 on the Hottest Hits of All Time list for 19 weeks, only being surpassed by Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” as of last week. Fortunately, this isn’t the end for Hill. His EP, 7, consists of absolute bangers like “Panini” and “Rodeo” ft. Cardi B, bringing in millions of spotify listeners each month. It seems Hill will definitely be seen more in the media as the years pass on.
Being gay, African American, and fairly young in the music industry, Hill has overcome obstacles and broken records that most can’t even dream about. Some might even say Hill has started a new era for the musical industry, and he definitely will earn his spot in the Hall of Fame when the time comes.
