“Well, look in the mirror, doll. We’re no Julia Roberts.” Isn’t It Romantic is a comedy, fantasy, and romance movie that portrays a greater message than some would ever believe. Natalie, the main protagonist, is a woman who sees life and love for what is, and she dare not try to sugarcoat the hard truth behind it. She hates the idea behind romantic comedies and the idea that finding love will be as easy as it is portrayed. Even at work, she is never noticed, and it is hard for her to present her ideas. One day, this all changes when she is mugged and knocked out, and she wakes up inside the thing she despises most- romantic comedies!

The entirety of the movie is witty and the aim of it is to satirize the idea and troupes behind rom-coms no matter how unrealistic they may be. Rebel Wilson, Adam DeVine, Liam Hemsworth, and the majority of the actors who played a part of this film truly played out their role in it and that really allowed you to see the message they were trying to present in a satirical way. It truly makes fun on the main elements of what makes a rom-com and the humor may not be for everyone, but it was quite funny and hysterical. There are many moments that make this movie what it is, and the idea that you need to realize that you are most likely not going to end up with a beautiful celebrity or model is key in portraying the sad but realistic truth that life is not a fairytale.

The movie may be satirical, but it does portray many messages that rom-coms truly keep secret. For example, what truly happens after characters end up together in a rom-com? Do they have a happy life or do they endure real-life situations like divorce? We never truly know and that is why this straight to the point rom-com was superb, as it puts the idea that life and love are not as easy as it seems straight into your mind and heart. Even the idea that you need to realize that there is always someone there who could love you, and they don’t need to be a beautiful celebrity like Liam Hemsworth or Priyanka Chopra for you to love them back is portrayed.

This movie is truly able to accomplish the goal that is was made for, and it truly allows you to laugh at the truth behind what fantasies rom-coms can put into someone’s head. So, I recommend that you watch it if you want to see the common troupes and false ideas about life and love that rom-coms aim to give.
