Recently, our administration has decided to implement “Response to Intervention”. This thirty minute period will help students excel in classes, and receive flying colors on their end of year exams. Several other schools have also switched to having an intervention period such as Coolidge, and Fairfield.

The practice of an RTI period used to be in place when seniors were in the sixth grade and it was called a “flex period”. The idea was brought back a couple of years ago by having an end of the daytime, and was changed last year to “power lunch”.

Personally, the RTI period is a good idea but needs a lot of work. Many teachers are saddled with three or four classes and for some, even five! Trying to squeeze that many classes into thirty minutes and helping 20 plus students is near impossible. After teachers have taken roll and explained to the class what’s happening during that time they are, on average,  left with only 15-20 minutes of instruction time. If teachers were given more time and the RTI period had a full class period devoted to it, students could get even more out of the class.

In conclusion, RTI seems to be a great idea and could really benefit students to help them excel in UIL events, exams, and extracurricular. With some work response to intervention, is an amazing idea.
